Smarter Solutions to Deal with Growing Complexity
I said in my previous post that ongoing new sets of regulatory requirements that a company needs to implement add further complexity to an organisation. This results in an ever-increasing challenge as far as oversight and control goes. To mitigate this calls for smarter ways of dealing with change. It necessitates a good understanding of what kinds of solutions are available to meet these new requirements. Perhaps even more important is the impact these options will have on your operating models. When implementing solutions to help you prepare for POPI, you want smart results. And you want results that enhance the operation and contain risk wherever possible.
First establish the exact nature of the beast
So for a large new change initiative driven, for example, by the requirements of the Data Protection Act (DPA) or the Protection Of Personal Information Act (POPI), and in the situation where there is significant ignorance about the extent of the legislation and its impact on the company (a typical scenario in South Africa currently where POPI awaits a commencement date for the one year transitional period to begin), there is a need to establish the “exact nature of the beast”. This needs to take into consideration the many variables and pressures at play in such a scenario. You need to get well informed about POPI before you do anything else. Hopefully our newsletter and the articles therein will go some way in helping you to prepare for POPI.
More About Our Newsletter
References: Information contained in this newsletter includes extracts from the TOSMS online training program: Introduction to Protection of Personal Information Act. The aim of providing this content is to assist individuals dealing with personal information about their clients, suppliers and staff in coming to terms with the extensive requirements of the POPI Act. See Training & E-Learning for more course details.
Understanding POPI In Layman’s Terms: As the Information Regulator has been appointed and the commencement date will be the next major announcement by the South African government that will kick-start the one year transitional period, we decided to embark on an education initiative for everyone who has subscribed to our newsletter. What this means is that we will be unpacking the legislation in bite-size chunks over the next year through our regular newsletter to provide a useful reference for individuals impacted by the POPI Act. You can subscribe to our newsletter in the footer of our website.
We will include other articles of relevance from time to time but mostly we will be covering what is in our POPI training program. Obviously it will not be as comprehensive as the training program but will expose the issues for you to then explore further where it triggers the need in your business to consider changes.
